- In order to avoid losing two spade tricks, declarer must lead spades twice from dummy.
- Dummy’s only cards of entry are in the diamond suit, and East can play small on the first lead of trumps and on the second can play the ace, then lead a heart to West who can play a third source of diamonds for East to ruff.
- In order to prevent this, declarer should, after winning the first spade lead from dummy, play his 5 of hearts.
- Cancelling the heart trick, which declarer must lose anyway at this juncture, destroys the defender’s lines of communication.
